Refurbishment at Bruntwood offices in Liverpool

One of Liverpool's most well-known office properties has revealed a new £400,000 reception area.

Family-owned commercial property company Bruntwood has renovated the entrance of the Cotton Exchange, situated on Bixteth Street. The grade II listed structure is now the premises of 48 businesses, who will all benefit from the new reception.

Some of the building's historic characteristics, including the original internal domes, have been restored as part of Bruntwood's high level refurbishment project, while the reception desk was moved around.

Focal point

Bruntwood head of sales Colin Forshaw commented: "The new entrance hall is worthy of the landmark status of the Cotton Exchange office building. While faithful to the Cotton Exchange's architecture, there is now a contemporary focal point at the core of the building, which is precisely what we had envisaged when we embarked on the renovation project. We are continuing to invest in the property and maintain its reputation as one of the most sought-after Liverpool offices out there."

Once the setting for lively and heated exchanges among Liverpool's textile traders, the Cotton Exchange was built for that purpose in 1906. It acted as the capital of the cotton trading world, with telephone lines and direct cables going to New York, Bremen and Bombay. Office space was added in the late sixties to replace the original elaborate facade of the building. The sculptures that once appeared on the facade can still be spotted around the grounds. A Portland Stone representation of Liverpool's The River Mersey is situated on Old Hall Street, while the figures of Commerce and Navigation sit in the courtyard.

Inside, there are relics of the building's intriguing history to be found everywhere, from the cotton motif on Edmund Street to the old granite columns within some of the office space.
